How does a player get into the NHL, besides being drafted in the NHL entry draft?
An example of this would be Andy Wozniewski, which according to Wikipedia, was not drafted into the NHL entry draft but still played a handful of games in the NHL for the Maple Leafs (even though he sucked balls).
Get signed as a free agent.
In the case of Wozniewski, he came out of the University of Wisconsin highly rated and the Leafs beat out the Red Wings and Rangers for his services.
Teams need more players than they can draft, so they continue to watch unsigned/undrafted players on teams to see what’s available.

Chicago’s never fired a coach during training camp, nor has the NHL ever offered 10 day contracts, Chicago’s coach in the early 80s was Orval Tessier, and he was fired on a cold January day by Bob Pulford.
Oh, and the NHL and NHLPA don’t authorize pay during training camp, that’s against Union policies.
Oh, and based on some of your other answers here in the hockey section, you have a LOT to learn about the game because it appears you have never seen the game played.

If you are a North American, you now have to go through two drafts undrafted before you be signed as a free-agent. Prior to the current CBA, if you were drafted as an 18 yr old, and weren’t signed within 2 years, you could declare yourself draft eligible again (only players previously draft could do this). If you weren’t drafted as an 18 yr old, you stayed eligible until you were 21.
